Background

This card game challenges players to battle their way through a progression of levels, each victory bringing them closer to ultimate godhood. As they advance through each level, they build strength, gain unique abilities, and unlock new opportunities. The final goal is to reach level 10, where the player ascends to godlike power, becoming the ultimate force in the game.

Goals

The game needed to be both enjoyable and thoroughly tested to ensure quality. It was essential to incorporate systems that foster player interaction, such as player-versus-player modes and leaderboards. The competitive environment should drive players’ desire to rank up, making the progression feel rewarding and engaging.

Challenges

Balancing gameplay is the necessary base to ensure it is both competitive and fair. The game’s mechanics need to allow for meaningful player progression while preventing overpowered strategies or characters can be difficult. Achieving this balance will require extensive playtesting and adjustments.

Roles and Responsibilities

UI/UX Design

I focussed on creating an interface that is both visually appealing and intuitive. This includes designing easy-to-understand card decks and progress bars. My goal is to ensure that all crucial details are presented clearly, improving the overall user experience while keeping the layout simple and user-friendly.

Additionally, I conduct tests with actual players to ensure the UI design is functional, accessible, and engaging, gathering feedback to refine and optimize the interface for the best possible experience.

Graphic Design

I was responsible for designing key printed materials, including the game box and instruction manual, ensuring they were visually engaging and on-brand. Additionally, I created custom card designs and icons that supported the visual narrative, maintaining a cohesive look and feel throughout the project.

Game Design

Firstly, we created and refined the core mechanics, rules, and overall gameplay. My role involved balancing player interactions, designing card abilities, and building a progression system that kept players engaged as they worked toward the ultimate goal of reaching level 10.

Playtesting was a key part of my process to fine-tune mechanics and ensure the game was both fun and competitive.

Key Takeaways

Collaboration

Cross-disciplinary collaboration is key to the success of this project. All aspects of the game should align with the overall vision, meaning team members have to work closely. Understanding and supporting each other’s roles, clear communication and collaboration are essential to make sure every detail worked harmoniously.

Achievements

Middle Ground

Successfully overcoming communication and collaboration challenges across different departments, we were able to bridge gaps in creative differences and align our goals. This led to a unified approach, where diverse perspectives contributed to the project’s success, enhancing the final product’s quality and cohesion.
