Background

Kardma is a visual redesign of the card game “Love Letter”, a game of risk, deduction, and luck where players try to expose other players to get to the princess.

The theme is a play on karma and cards, suggesting that actions taken within the game can have consequences in future rounds, reinforcing the idea that dishonesty or foul play may lead to repercussions down the line.

Goals

The aim is to refresh the game’s aesthetic to make it more visually engaging, ensuring that elements like colors, textures, and UI components are more polished and visually cohesive.

Challenges

We needed to ensure the visual updates aligned with the game’s narrative and overall theme. This involved understanding the story, world, and emotional tone the game aimed to convey, and making sure that the visuals supported and enhanced these elements.

Roles and Responsibilities

UI Design

I focused on making each card visually distinct while ensuring it fit within the game’s overall aesthetic. The design needed to accommodate necessary text, icons, and images clearly and legibly. I also developed a cohesive visual style across the interface, ensuring consistency between cards, menus, and buttons, and aligning them with the game’s theme.

Graphic Design

I designed custom illustrations, typography and visual elements to represent the game’s actions. Distinct designs and colors help players quickly understand the game mechanics. Additionally, I handled packaging design, including the card box, game board, and instruction manuals, ensuring that all materials are visually appealing and print-ready.
